Tax liability is not the same as withholding

Tax liability is the estimated tax on taxable income after the relevant deductions, credits, and tax rules. Withholding and estimated payments are amounts already paid toward that liability. A refund or balance due is the difference between the two, subject to the details of your return.

Choose the right FormatNest tool

Use Tax Bracket Calculator for marginal-bracket context, Estimated Tax Calculator for planning, Tax Refund Calculator for a refund-or-owed estimate, Salary Calculator for pay conversions, and Paycheck Calculator for a take-home-pay estimate.

Example scenario

Enter income, filing status, withholding, deductions, credits, and payments consistently. Then compare the result with your latest paystub and the current IRS estimator or Form 1040-ES instructions.

Important limits

Tax laws, thresholds, deductions, credits, and state rules change. Treat a result as a planning estimate, not a filing determination, and verify important decisions against current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional.
