Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows?

Windows requires a paid HEVC Video Extensions codec from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC files natively. Converting to JPG avoids this entirely.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

At 88% quality, the difference is invisible on screen. HEIC uses a more efficient compression algorithm than JPG, so the JPG at the same visual quality will be slightly larger than the HEIC.
