WEBP is an image format developed by Google and released in 2010. Its goal: replace JPG and PNG with a single format that is smaller, just as high quality, and supports all the features both formats offer.
How does WEBP work?
WEBP uses a compression algorithm based on the VP8 video codec. For lossy images, it is more efficient than JPG. For lossless images, it is more efficient than PNG. The result: consistently smaller files at the same visual quality.
WEBP vs JPG vs PNG: file sizes
- WEBP lossy is typically 25-35% smaller than JPG at the same quality.
- WEBP lossless is typically 26% smaller than PNG.
- WEBP also supports transparency (like PNG) and animation (like GIF).
Browser support
WEBP is supported by Chrome, Firefox, Safari (since 2020), Edge, and Opera — effectively all modern browsers. If you are building for modern browsers, WEBP is safe to use.
When WEBP is not the right choice
- Print — printers and design software prefer TIFF, PDF, or PNG.
- Email — some email clients do not render WEBP. Use JPG for email images.
- Photos you will edit — use PNG as your working format; convert to WEBP for delivery.
How to convert WEBP on FormatNest
WEBP to JPG — for email, apps, and anywhere WEBP is not supported.
Compress WEBP — reduce file size further while keeping the format.
