Apple introduced HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) in iOS 11 as the default photo format for iPhones. HEIC files are about half the size of JPG at the same quality. The problem: almost nothing outside the Apple ecosystem can open them natively.
Why can I not open HEIC on Windows or Android?
HEIC is based on the HEVC (H.265) video codec, which requires a licence to implement. Microsoft added basic HEIC support to Windows 10/11 via a paid codec extension, but many apps still do not support it. Android, Linux, and most web services have no HEIC support at all.
When do you need to convert HEIC to JPG?
- Uploading photos to websites, forms, or social media
- Sharing with friends who use Windows or Android
- Opening in Photoshop or older image editors
- Attaching photos to emails
- Importing into Google Photos or non-Apple cloud services
How to convert HEIC to JPG on FormatNest
- Open HEIC to JPG.
- Upload your HEIC file from your phone or computer.
- Click Convert.
- Download the JPG — compatible with everything.
How to stop iPhone from saving as HEIC
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This saves photos as JPG by default. You will lose some efficiency but gain universal compatibility.
Quality after conversion
JPG is lossy, so converting HEIC to JPG introduces some compression. At quality 85% and above the difference is invisible to the naked eye.
